Listening to Capacity: Chronic Illness, Disability, and Ethical Adaptation in Massage Therapy is a five-hour, text-based continuing-education program for massage therapists who want to respond skillfully when chronic illness, disability, access barriers, or changing capacity affect a client’s participation in massage.
The program examines disability culture, ableism, structural access, present capacity, relevant inquiry, shared planning, professional power, ongoing consent, ethical adaptation, transparent boundaries, neutral documentation, and repair. You will learn how to identify barriers without locating every difficulty in the client, ask what is workable without demanding unnecessary medical information, revise a plan without shame or pressure, maintain meaningful consent, and document changes without judgment or diagnosis.
This program does not teach diagnosis-specific massage protocols or medical management of chronic illness and disability. It develops cultural awareness, ethical reasoning, and practical communication skills for situations in which the original plan no longer fits the person in front of you.
The program includes two separate courses:
Module 1: 1 CE hour in Cultural Competency, delivered through self-paced distance learning.
Modules 2–5: 4 CE hours in Ethics, Boundaries, and Communication, delivered through supervised interactive distance learning.
Completion requires the private learning activities, a 10-question Cultural Competency quiz, four brief supervised ethics assignments, a 20-question final ethics quiz, two course evaluations, and confirmation that all required private activities were completed.
Your instructor personally reviews the ethics assignments and provides individualized written feedback. Instructor review and certificate processing ordinarily occur within 24–48 business hours after a complete, accessible submission is received. Weekends and holidays are excluded.
Course access lasts 30 calendar days from purchase. All required activities, assignments, quizzes, evaluations, revisions, and retakes must be completed during active access unless an extension has been approved in writing.

Listening to Capacity: Chronic Illness, Disability, and Ethical Adaptation in Massage Therapy is a five-hour continuing-education program for massage therapists. It examines how disability and chronic illness may affect access, communication, positioning, pacing, consent, participation, and the ability to sustain an earlier session plan.
The program focuses on disability culture, ableism, structural access, present capacity, relevant inquiry, shared planning, professional power, ongoing consent, ethical adaptation, boundaries, neutral documentation, and repair.
This is not a diagnosis-specific massage course. It does not teach medical management or treatment protocols for particular conditions. Instead, it develops the ethical reasoning and communication skills needed when the original plan no longer fits the person in front of you.

Adapt session goals, duration, pace, position, touch, sensory conditions, and communication within scope.
Document client report, therapist observation, consent, action, response, and follow-up neutrally.
Respond to relational rupture through accountable repair.

The five-hour program contains two separate continuing-education courses:
Cultural Competency
1 CE hour
Module 1 explores disability culture, four approaches to understanding disability, interpersonal and structural ableism, professional language, presumption of competence, intersectionality, and access in massage practice.
Completion requires the module activities, a 10-question quiz with a passing score of at least 80%, a course evaluation, and a private-activity attestation.
Ethics, Boundaries, and Communication
4 CE hours
Modules 2–5 address:
Present capacity and relevant inquiry.
Shared planning and professional boundaries.
Consent when conditions change.
Adaptation, documentation, and repair.
This course is delivered through supervised interactive distance learning. Completion requires four brief written assignments, a 20-question final quiz with a passing score of at least 80%, a course evaluation, and a private-activity attestation.
Each course has separate completion requirements and is documented with a separate certificate.

One Cultural Competency quiz retake is ordinarily permitted during active access. For the ethics course, one focused revision of each supervised assignment and one final-quiz retake are ordinarily permitted.
A certificate is issued only after the requirements for that course have been completed.

Melissa Haeckel is a licensed massage therapist, somatic educator, and nurse with over 20 years of experience. This course grew out of years of sitting with a question that standard CE rarely asks: what does it actually mean to listen to pain?
Her work integrates clinical training, pain science, ethical awareness, and trauma-informed practice for bodywork practitioners. Through Listening Field Training, she offers continuing education grounded in ethics, evidence, and professional presence.
The Supervised Ethics Assignment is the point of this course — your written response is read personally by Melissa, and she writes back. That exchange is not a checkbox. It is a real professional conversation.

This is a supervised, text-based continuing-education course. Required assessments include original written reflections focused on personal and professional self-examination related to ethical practice and cultural humility. Most responses are approximately 150 words.
