Cultural Competency and Health Equity CE: One Course That Meets Both Oregon and Washington Requirements

If you're a massage therapist in Oregon or Washington, your renewal requirements now include more than just ethics hours. Both states recognize the importance of culturally responsive care — and both require continuing education that addresses it. The good news is that a single, well-designed course can meet requirements in both states at once.

Two States, Two Requirements, One Solution

Oregon requires at least 1 hour of cultural competency CE as defined by ORS 413.45, covering awareness of cultural differences, responsiveness in clinical care, and understanding how social identity shapes the therapeutic relationship.

Washington now requires a minimum of 2 hours of health equity continuing education every renewal cycle under WAC 246-12-820. Health equity CE addresses how systemic barriers, implicit bias, and social determinants of health affect access to care and clinical outcomes.

While these requirements use different language, they share common ground: both ask therapists to examine how identity, power, and social context shape the care we provide. A course grounded in cultural competency that also addresses health equity principles can satisfy both requirements with a single enrollment

What The Listening Field Offers

The Listening Field now offers a 2-Hour Health Equity CE course designed specifically for Washington massage therapists — and the content also supports Oregon's cultural competency requirement. This course covers implicit bias in clinical settings, structural barriers to care, culturally responsive intake and communication practices, and practical strategies for building an inclusive, equity-informed practice.

For Oregon therapists, the Across Difference: Cultural Competency for Massage Therapists course provides 1 hour of dedicated cultural competency CE. It can be taken as a standalone or bundled with any ethics course.

For therapists licensed in both states or looking to meet multiple requirements at once, bundles that pair ethics with cultural competency or health equity offer the most efficient path to renewal.

Review your state's current renewal requirements, then choose the course or bundle that fits. Visit our State CE Acceptance page for guidance, or browse all available courses at listeningfieldtraining.com/courses-main
